Met a Walker

6/5/2016. Charlie Lake to Wonowon.  50 miles.  Tonight we are dry camping in a gas station parking lot.  Certainly not ideal but we managed.  At camp we met a guy walking to the Yukon with his dog.  He pulls a trailer and manages 15 - 20 miles a day.  He said he sold everything and hit the road 13 months ago.  Wintered over in Vancouver and started walking again in April.  He pulls a trailer made in Europe and goes at a really fast pace.

6/6/2016. Wonowon to Sikanni River Campground.  59 miles.  Russ and I shared driving duties today and I think I got the better deal.  We saw our first black bear today.  It was along the road and didn't look so big until it noticed us and stood up on his hind legs.  Then it seemed huge.  We were so surprised and not sure what to do, that no one grabbed their cameras to take a picture.  Now we are caring bear spray on our bikes.   Then about 15 miles down the road I saw a mother moose with 2 babies running along the road.  So it was a rather an exciting day.   And biking was good too!

Russ saw the first moose.

Russ won the moose pool.   He was out front and a moose crossed the road.  He whipped out his phone and snapped a picture. (That was one of the rules).  Russ and Bill gladly put up Jane's tent nightly.  A great trade off for her cooking.  She loves the kitchen and we love the results!

Longest Downhill that We Have Experienced

6/3/2016. Dawson Creek to Fort St. John.   52 miles.   Today was the first time that some of us realized the danger of what we are doing.  On the 2 lane highway there were so many big trucks, traffic in general, road construction and no shoulders in places.  Also often the rubble strip was centered in the shoulder with drop offs.  Then top it off with headwind and you can get an idea of the riding conditions.  In one long construction zone I walked my bike for maybe a mile because conditions were so poor.  We also experienced a 6K downhill with a 10% grade including a long grated bridge which we walked our bikes across on the sidewalk.  Now we are at a nice campground and have a rest day.

All the big trucks were stopped to check brakes before this long downhill.

6/2/2016. Grand Prairie to Dawson Creek.  80+ miles.  Rainy and head wind again today.  Half the group bailed at half way point.  Russ and I included.  Cold, wet and dirty.  Really glad to have fenders.  Those without were really covered with grime.   But we did find a campground with hot showers and laundry facilities.

Lots of Money Traveling Down the Road

We have never seen so many big motorhomes traveling down the highway.  Bud said they are all heading for Alaska.  Also a lot of 5th wheel horse trailers.  You would be really rich up here if you had a truck dealership.  Everyone seems to be driving trucks and most of the trucks are pulling something behind them.  Also a lot of oversize loads on the road along with tankers that we think might be hauling gas or oil.

The scenery has turned to forest and small rivers and lakes.  Signs are posted to watch out for moose and deer.  Still haven't seen any.

6/1/2016.  Valleyview to Grand Prairie. 67 miles.  Today took 6 hours to go 67 miles.  Headwind all day and a huge hill to climb.  We are all pretty tired tonight.  Also our first encounter with mosquitoes  in camp.  But the best part of the day was our stop at a donut stand on the highway.  It was the best that I have ever tasted.
